A Look Back at 2013

A Look Back...2013

2013 was an amazing year filled with growth and life changing experiences. From my pregnancy journey to child birth and motherhood, God has been faithful. Today, I am a proud daughter, working mom, wife and friend. My mother instilled in me that with hard work, determination, perseverance and faith in God, all things work out for good.

Christmas memories

Hi everyone! Hope you enjoyed the Christmas break with your loved ones and family members. We stayed home to celebrate Nolan’s first Christmas and spent the holidays with family members from Canada. It was definitely a memorable Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, we went to see some light display and decorations and returned home to wear our matching pajamas – a family tradition. I always love to do this with my family. Do you guys have any family tradition?

Another family tradition is to open our gifts after Church on Christmas day and this year was not different. We went to church and the sermon was great. When we got home, we could not wait to open our gifts. Nolan was so into his gifts or maybe he was into the colorful wrapping papers. Several friends visited at different times and we spent the entire day eating and catching up.

Here are some snippets of our Christmas memories...

Holiday Style: Jewel Tone

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend…the weekend before Christmas. I spent mine doing some last minute shopping and literally went from one shop to the other. I am a big fan of online shopping so I was pretty tired as most stores were crowded with last minute shoppers like me. I was however able to get all I needed. Tonight, I will be wrapping all the gifts. Have you completed your Holiday shopping?

Speaking of the holiday, my current outfit is great for a holiday work event. The jewel tone color incorporates both fall and festive seasons. The length and fit of the skirt is perfect for a work event. The color of the skirt is a statement on its own i.e. bold and vibrant. I chose the Jean Cazabat color block pumps to complement the emerald skirt while keeping other accessories to a minimum.

Rail Trail

Hello guys! How are you all doing? Christmas is almost here… what are your plans? Do you have any plans for the New Year celebration? Have you found your outfits? I am still searching for what to wear. I really love the red skirt here and I am eying this Anthropologie dress. I am also confused about these skirts from Topshop (skirts #1 and #2)…What are your thoughts?

This post features my all-time favorite skirt of 2013; I also wore it more than any other. I love the fitting, color and versatility. For this post, I paired the skirt with a polka ¾ sleeves from JCrew. The shirt gives it a more formal look when compared to my previous combinations (as seen here & here). The skirt paired with the shirt is one of my holiday styles – a great way to add color to any Christmas event besides the traditional red/burgundy colors.

6 Months

Our little baby Nolan is 6 months old! It stills feels like yesterday i.e. being pregnant and the excitement of his delivery. He has been such a blessing to our family and a happy baby who loves to giggle and smile. His constant cooing is simply amazing. After work, I always look forward to his big smile when he sees me…totally melts my heart. Now, he cries whenever his daddy is leaving for work (hubby loves to kiss his cheeks before leaving home).

We are blessed to have him and forever grateful to God. Of course, we are looking forward to his first Christmas with us. Nolan stares at the Christmas tree and I wonder if the ornaments, lights or the tree itself is what interests him. You can check out our Christmas tree and other moments with him on my Instagram including snip videos.

Red Blaze

Happy new week guys! Hope you all had a great weekend. Hubby and I took Nolan to Sesame Place in Pennsylvania this weekend. It was a short getaway and we enjoyed the beautiful Christmas decorations. We returned to the hotel earlier than expected due to a heavy snowstorm.

With Christmas and the holiday season in full effect, sequin is a staple for celebrations. There are different ways to incorporate sequins into holiday styles i.e. with skirts, pants or dresses. I recently wore the sequin leggings in this post for a holiday event with friends. In a festive mood, I wore a red blazer and a plaid scarf to compliment the blazer. Of course, I put on my signature red lipstick ;)

Work Style: Grey Scale

Hi everyone! Hope you are all having a great week. Not only did we get our first snow of the season this week, I had my first snow-in day. Yep, I stayed home yesterday with my baby boy. We listened to Christmas songs and kiddie rhymes. He loves music / sounds and he is gradually taking over our IPads with his sing along songs.
The current outfit post references my prior post on “shades of grey” trend, which highlights how you can combine similar shades or mix it up different color tones or prints. For this outfit, I incorporated my Target check shirt with shades of grey. Adding a black and white check print gives a unique touch to the look without taking away from the overall outfit. A great way to spice up a monochrome work style without drawing much attention is to incorporate prints with similar color tones.

Trend Alert: 50 Shades of Grey

I bet you are wondering what '50 Shades of Grey' has to do with fashion. Well, this is not about Christian Grey, but about one of the most popular color at the moment and often underrated. Check back tomorrow to see how I styled my shades of grey.

Statement Piece

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend and getting into the festive spirit. Over the weekend, we took Nolan to his first Santa visit and surprisingly, he did not cry but curiously stared at Santa. Our Christmas tree is also coming up well even though I still need to add more ornaments. I am yet to start my Christmas shopping. Have you started shopping yet? Check out all my gift guide ideas for inspirations. Also, it just might be a white Christmas as we had our first snow yesterday.

In this post, I am wearing my sleeve coat; I love the thickness and edgy look. This look is different compared to my previous one with a “boyfriend jeans”. I accessorized with a statement necklace from Soko, which was handmade from Kenya. I completed the look with my Zara shoes for an overall appeal.

Different Take

Hi everyone! Hope you had a great weekend and hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break.  On Instagram, I posted a picture of our Christmas tree. In the past, we always used artificial trees however, this Christmas will be special with Nolan so we decided to get a real tree. My husband got it Thanksgiving morning and it was fun watching him set it up. The tree kept falling but eventually, it settled in - love the tree and the unique pine smell. I hope to put the ornaments in the coming weeks. The rest of my weekend was spent relaxing and watching reruns of reality TV shows.
This outfit post is a different take on my 'choies skirt' casually worn here. This time around, I complimented with an off-shoulder top for a sexy yet classy twist to the neon skirt. I completed the look with dark shades of accessories including a leopard print for a calmer tone.

Grid On Grid!

Hi beautiful people! My long weekend begins today - so ready for the Thanksgiving break and some good family time. We will be visiting my parents for the holiday and it will be my “food cheat day”. What are your plans for the break? Other than visiting my parents and some friends, I intend to stay indoors and start my Christmas decorations while catching up on TV reruns of Homeland. Are you a fan of the show?
The outfit in this post shows my continued love of mixing prints as shown in previous posts and will be featured in subsequent ones. I wore the gap pant earlier in the year but this time, I decided to pair with “grid” patterns. I tried to keep the whole outfit simple and when mixing prints, I love to combine prints with common colors and solid backgrounds.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving Break…

Sweet Colors

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend and what are your plans for the Thanksgiving break? Did you get to watch the American Music Awards? Thoughts?  I could not understand Miley Cyrus’ performance. I loved Ciara’s fashion choice and congratulations to Rihanna on her first ICON Award. I watched the awards with Nolan playing next to me and you would not believe his reaction when Ariana Grande started singing; He stopped talking and focused on the TV. Of course, she has a beautiful voice similar to Mariah Carey’s.
The weather has really changed and it is getting much colder. When it was warm, I took my “Duro Olowo” set out - love the prints and colors. The colors are perfectly suited for the fall and also applicable to the spring and summer. I decided to pair both prints with my burgundy pumps and a red coat for fall tone. I completed the look with a beige bag to offset the colors. If you feel like pairing both prints will not work, you can pair with a green or burgundy top/bottom.

Weekend Cravings: Sleepwear

As I am typing this post, I am sitting with Nolan – both wearing our pajamas and watching the American Music Awards. I will be tweeting  and posting red carpet pictures on my  Facebook. That is the way my Sunday evening will be. As the holiday approaches, I love to lounge around in pajamas especially after a full meal. I think it is about time that I stock up on cute pajamas including some festive ones.

Not So Secret...Post Baby

Staying healthy before and during my pregnancy really helped me get back in shape after delivery. This included a routine of fitness exercises and a healthy diet. My Pilates exercises were modified at each stage of my pregnancy and I continued until Nolan’s birth. While pregnant, I walked a mile or two during lunch breaks which included climbing approximately 100 stairs (6 – 7 floors). Though I had some cravings during my pregnancy, I tried to maintain a healthy eating habit. Some of my cravings included mangoes, okra soup and lots of pina colada.

After delivery, I used a belly girdle  which was pretty helpful but what I attribute mostly to my post pregnancy weight loss is breast feeding. I breast fed my baby exclusively and the more I continued, the more I noticed a weight loss and ironically, my appetite increased. As a result, I ate smaller portions and stayed away from junk foods. About 3 months later, I switched to moderate carbs with more proteins and veggies.

Currently, I am enrolled in a group fitness class which includes Zumba dance routines, energetic weight training and “kick, punch and jab” energizing cardio sessions. I try to exercise consistently and monitor what I eat based on availability and practicability. I drink a lot of water and below is my current meal plan.

Ø  Oatmeal
Ø  Cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats with Almond milk)
Ø  Omelet with egg whites
Ø  Wheat bread (no more than 2 slices with 1 boiled eggs)
Ø  Greek yogurt with fruits or granola, almonds & walnuts mixed

Ø  Rice with veggies (broccoli, string beans, cauliflower, mixed vegetables)
Ø  Chicken (boiled or baked) with veggies
Ø  Fish with rice & veggies
Ø  Salad and chicken (love Chicken Caesar salad)
Ø  Rice with efo or egusi (Traditional vegetable soup)

*Usually I eat 1-1/2 cup/s of rice…brown rice preferably

Snacks (snack a lot)
Ø  Carrots
Ø  Mangoes, strawberries, apple, banana, cranberries, plum
Ø  Saltine crackers
Ø  Peanut butter & crackers
Ø  Dried banana chips or almonds

Try this belly girdles here:
